Reports to: The Institute Administrator
Span of Control: Several IT Assistants and IT Interns.
Responsibilities:
The IT Manager will be responsible for the management of the IT Department for the Institute. S/he will manage the security of electronic data, technical operations, the efficiency and cost aspects, of the IT system. S/he will have a core responsibility of training staff and reinforcing good policies and best practices of IT facilities. In addition S/he will be responsible for overseeing the efficient functioning of the Institutes e-Library and video-conferencing facility.
The IT Manager will be responsible for the following specific tasks:
- Assist in IT Planning and implementation.
- Identify new technologies and methods that will benefit the Institute and its operations.
- Managing the UVRI e-Library and video-conferencing system.
- Visit UVRI collaborators at Makerere University to liaise with them and help them set up and run videoconference systems.
- Managing and regular updating of UVRI websites.
- Manage maintenance of servers, computers and accessories.
- Ensure regular data back-ups
- Liaise with various ISP’s and vendors to ensure supply and maintenance of required IT services and equipment.
- Prepare and monitor the IT budget.
- Liaise with IT administrators collaborating with UVRI to develop a broader IT system.
- Oversee and participate in data capture and query resolutions for research.
- Ensure the implementation of Institute IT policies.
- Install, configure, troubleshoot, and keep custody of computer software, manuals, license, and tools.
- Design, manage, and implement databases using ACCESS as need arises.
- Act as an advisor to UVRI and Institute partners on IT matters.

Requirement:
- Honors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent field, together with MCSE and CCNA certification.
- At least 2 years of experience in IT and LAN/WAN management at a supervisory level in a large institution.
- Proven experience of working at a supervisory level in a multicultural institution and knowledge of proprietary scientific applications.
- Hands on experience in Cisco routing and switching.
- Hands on experience on Cisco VolP and Cisco Call Manager.
- Good analytic, administrative, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Solid understanding of data management routines.
- Experience with video-conferencing facilities and an e-Library.
Duration: 18 months but renewable depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Salary: Negotiable but attractive. |
